Cattle on a ranch at dawn

A Morning at the Ranch

Monday, February 2, 2015

Can it only be a week ago that I was in sunny Florida?  After yesterday’s blizzard in Chicago, it seems long ago.

While attending FOTOfusion in West Palm Beach, I took a side excursion to the Adams Ranch in St. Lucie. This 34,000 acre ranch has been owned and  run by the same family for generations. We left West Palm Beach at 5:30 AM, arriving at the ranch at dawn.

The land with hovering mist was bathed in pastel light.

The cattle were ghostly forms dotting the landscape.  The clouds appeared as fluffy mountains in the distance.

The rising sun’s rays pierced the banks of trees.  We travelled in an old camouflaged school bus over the rough “roads”  as we discovered one beautiful scene after another.

We hung out for a while, back by the corral. We saw the barn that was covered with animal skulls and viewed the fenced-in herd. Those of us that climbed a wooden fence witnessed the cowhands branding some of the cattle.
